The lightsaber wielded by Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars film has sold for $200,000 at an auction in Beverly Hills, officials said on Saturday.

Another lightsabre, used by the evil Darth Vader character in The Empire Strikes, went for $118,000. Both weapons sold for double their estimated value.

Luke’s X-Wing flight suit went for $70,000, an original screen-used Stormtrooper blaster fetched $56,000 and a Chewbacca face mask sold for $50,000.

Other Star Wars memorabilia sold included Yoda's walking cane for $50,000 and a Snowspeeder model for $35,400.

They were part of a collection of props sold by Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz.

During the production of the Star Wars films, and in the years since their release, Mr Kurtz collected a huge personal archive of original Star Wars production props, paperwork and publicity material from around the world.

The identity of the buyers was not released.
