Harry Potter orders surpass 1.5m mark

Worldwide advance orders for the final Harry Potter book have reached nearly 1.6 million, according to leading internet retailer Amazon.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, JK Rowling's seventh Potter book, has become Amazon's most pre-ordered product.

It has surpassed the previous Amazon record of 1.5 million, set by another Potter book, The Half-Blood Prince, in 2005.

The Half-Blood Prince became the fastest-selling book in history, selling 6.9 million copies in the first 24 hours.

The Deathly Hallows, which will see two of the main characters die, has a global release date of July 21.

All six Harry Potter books have been number one bestsellers in the US, the UK and around the world.

There are currently over 120 million copies of the Harry Potter books in print in the US alone.

The books, which have been translated into 63 languages, follow the story of a boy wizard and his two school friends as they investigate magical mysteries.

More than 325 million Potter books have been sold worldwide.

The fifth film based on the popular books, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, will be released around the globe on July 11.

It had its European premiere in London on July 3.
