26th March 2007

An unfinished novel by The Lord of the Rings author JRR Tolkien will be published next month.

The Children of Hurin, which Tolkien started writing in 1918, has been completed by the late author's son, Christopher.

Publisher HarperCollins said the book will be released in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand on April 17.

It has been illustrated by Alan Lee, who won an Academy Award for art direction on The Return of the King in 2004.

HarperCollins describes the book as "an epic story of adventure, tragedy, fellowship and heroism".

In a public statement, Christopher, 80, said: "It has seemed to me for a long time that there was a good case for presenting my father's long version of the legend of The Children of Hurin as an independent work, between its own covers."

Tolkien's acclaimed The Lord of the Rings trilogy has sold over 50 million copies worldwide.

The trilogy has also been adapted into three movies which between them took over $2.5bn at the global box office.

Other famous books by Tolkien include The Silmarillion, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Roverandum, Smith of Wooton Major and The Hobbit.

Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa, in 1892 and died in Bournemouth, England, in 1973 at the age of 81.
