Lifetime bet wins UK punter £1,000

Hull City were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their 104-year history

Hull City were promoted to the Premier League for the first time in their 104-year history

28th May 2008

A British man has collected a cool £1,000 after successfully betting on his favourite football team.

Ken Jaques, 58, from Hull, placed a £50 bet at 20-1 with William Hill in 2003 that Hull City would reach the Premier League before he dies.

And Mr Jaques' bet finally paid off on Saturday afternoon when Hull City secured promotion to England's top league with a 1-0 win over Bristol City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley.

In 2003, when Mr Jaques made his ambitious bet, Hull City were in the basement division of the football league.

William Hill said they took into account his age, average life expectancy and the chances of Hull being promoted two divisions, to give odds of 20-1.

The odds would be 1-20 on a similar bet made now, the bookies estimated.

Graham Sharpe, William Hill's spokesman, said: "I just hope he stakes it all on Hull winning the Champions League before he dies now to give us chance to win it back."

The firm makes Hull City 4/11 favourites to be relegated from the Premier League next season.
