Google is the world's most valuable brand, according to the annual Brandz Top 100 Most Powerful Brands ranking.

The US internet search giant has overtaken Microsoft to top this year's ranking. Google has a brand value of $66.4bn.

General Electric was second with $62bn, followed by Microsoft ($55bn) and Coca-Cola ($44bn).

Compiled by global consultancy firm Millward Brown, the Brandz Top 100 identifies the most powerful brands in the world as measured by their dollar value.

The total value of the Top 100 brands has jumped 10.6 per cent in the past 12 months to reach a massive $1.6 trillion.

China Mobile finished in fifth spot, with Marlboro sixth, Wal-Mart seventh, Citi eighth, IBM ninth and Toyota tenth.

The survey also revealed that the likes of Nokia, Apple, Sony Ericsson, BP and Burger King had significant brand value

Mobile phone firm Vodafone was the top UK brand, followed by banking giant HSBC and supermarket group Tesco.

Google was founded in 1998 by Larry Page and Sergey Bin while they were still students at Standford University.
