The University of Oxford has been named the best university in the UK, in a national newspaper survey.

The Sunday Times ranked 109 UK universities and higher education colleges on nine factors including student satisfaction, entry standards, spend on books and computers, degree results and student-staff ratio.

Cambridge University was ranked second, followed by Imperial College London in third, London School of Economics in fourth and University College London in fifth.

Loughborough, Bristol, Warwick, Bath and Durham complete the prestigious top ten.

Edinburgh is still Scotland's top university, despite falling six places to eleventh.

Exeter finished in 28th place, Liverpool came 39th and Hull was placed 49th.

New universities include Winchester (62), Chichester (64), Bath Spa (73) and Worcester (82).
