Two-thirds of British people would like to learn a new language in 2007, a survey has revealed.
The survey of more than 500 people found that French was the most popular language choice, with 23 per cent claiming it is the language they would most like to learn.
Spanish (20 per cent) finished in second place, followed by Chinese (Mandarin) (15 per cent) in third.
Being able to communicate while travelling was the biggest motivating factor cited by those planning to learn a new language in 2007
The survey, conducted by online language-learning firm Rosetta Stone, also found that improved job prospects played a major part in deciding to learn a second language.
Previous Rosetta Stone research revealed that three quarters of bilingual people claimed that knowing an additional language had helped further their careers.
Michael Lefante, spokesperson for Rosetta Stone EMEA said: "More people are realizing the many benefits that come with being able to speak a second language.
"In addition to improving communication, learning a language can increase mental agility, develop problem solving skills and enhance cultural understanding.
"With advances in technology making language learning easier than ever before, it is a resolution worth making."
