The delicious Biddenden Vineyards Ortega 2006 is our Wine of the Week.
Style: Medium dry still white wine
Medium dry can be a confusing term, describing neither one thing nor the other - too sweet for dry wine drinkers or too dry for people who like something a little sweeter?
However, we urge you to try this wine - whatever your tastes. English wines contain sufficient zesty acidity in their wines that create a perfect balance with some additional sweetness in the wine, and this is a perfect example.
Biddenden Ortega introduces you to just how an off dry wine should be – not cloying, not dull, but a lovely combination of acidity, aromatic fruit and that touch of sweetness to round it off to a clean finish.
Ortega is a Germanic variety that has with high natural sugars that produces very full flavours and the capacity, when ripe, to produce some powerful tropical flavours, countered with delicate peachiness and a lengthy finish.
Biddenden Vineyards, a family run operation in Kent is one of the leading producers of this variety, and this wine is one of their top sellers. Try it with a bit of cheese - the apricotty fruit flavours and residual sweetness combine mouth-wateringly with the tanginess of the cheese. A perfect match!
The wine is available in local outlets, and from Biddenden Vineyards either direct or by mail order - www.biddendenvineyards.co.uk, price £7.50.
