This latest release from one of England's leading sparkling wine producers illustrates just how classy English fizz is.
English wines, particularly sparkling, have been proving over and over again in blind tastings and competitions that they are world class, often beating some better-known competitors.
The South Downs of Sussex share an almost identical geology and climate to the Champagne region - so it is not surprising that the wine writers are comparing some English sparkling wines to those from that quintessential sparkling wine area.
This wine of the week is a great example of what is becoming the fastest growth sector in English wines.
RidgeView is a family-owned and run wine estate based in East Sussex, producing sparkling wine from traditional Champagne varieties and methods.
In just seven years of sales, RidgeView have won no fewer than 80 medals and 15 trophies in international and national competitions.
Bloomsbury is one of RidgeView's flagship wines, and is a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
This 2005 vintage has just been released. It is very light gold colour with a lovely fine mousse, and is already showing dominant fruit characters - a very classy fizz. Ready to drink now or keep for three or four years.
Available from Waitrose (£18.95 per bottle) and direct from vineyard. Please contact RidgeView (www.ridgeviewestate.co.uk) for further availability.
