Fantasy game World of Warcraft has surpassed one million players in Europe, the game's creator Blizzard Entertainment has announced.

The hugely popular online role-playing game was released in Europe in February 2005.

Worldwide, the game has a growing audience of more than 5.5 million users.

Blizzard said the game topped sales charts for full price PC games in Europe last year.

Seeing the popularity, Blizzard confirmed that it would release an expansion pack later this year.

The expansion will add new lands, quests, monsters, magic items, spells and abilities, two new player races, a new player profession and 10 new levels of power for players to achieve.

"It is extremely rewarding to see so many European players enjoying World of Warcraft," said Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment.

"The players have supported our belief in the European MMORPG market, and we thank them for helping us make World of Warcraft one of the most popular games in the world."

World of Warcraft has steadily grown in popularity around the world since its initial launch in North America, Australia and New Zealand in late 2004.

Following successful launches in Korea, Europe, China and Singapore, Blizzard launched the game in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.
