Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has topped the North American box office for a second week, taking $28.3m over the weekend.

The film, starring Jonnny Depp, has taken $114.1m in the US and Canada since its release on July 15, according to studio estimates.

Based on the classic book by Roald Dahl, Depp plays Willy Wonka, a creepy chocolate pioneer who takes five children on a tour of his mythical operations.

The film also stars Freddie Highmore, David Kelly, Helena Bonham Carter, James Fox, and Christopher Lee.

The comedy Wedding Crashers stayed in second place with $26.2m, while The Fantastic Four remained at number three with $12.3m.

Michael Bay's sci-fi thriller The Island took $12.1m to enter in fourth place.

Baseball comedy Bad New Bears, starring Billy Bob Thornton, debuted in fifth place, taking $11.5m.

Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds became the second biggest film of the year in the US, behind Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

The sci-fi thriller, starring Tom Cruise, has taken $208.3m since its release, while Star Wars has taken a whopping $376m.
