The third Pirates of the Caribbean film has topped the North American box office for a second consecutive weekend.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which cost a reported $75m to make, earned $43.2m between Friday and Sunday, figures from Media by Numbers shows.

Its 10-day US total stands at $217m. However, the second Pirates film, Dead Man's Chest, had made $258m after the same period in 2006.

At World's End, which stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, has generated a whopping $625.3m worldwide, according to Walt Disney.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End' is continuing to captivate and enthrall audiences all over the world and to perform like the champion that it is," said Mark Zoradi, president of Walt Disney Studios Marketing.

"Word-of-mouth continues to be fantastic and the returns at the global box office reflect the film's phenomenal popularity.

Mark Zoradi, Walt Disney: "We're thrilled with the film's performance so far and have high hopes for its continued success at the box office."

At World's End picks up where Dead Man's Chest ended with mystic Tia Dalma joining forces with plucky heroes Will Turner, played by Bloom, and Elizabeth Swan, played by Knightley, to rescue Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Depp, from a fate worse than death.

Aided by Captain Barbossa of The Black Pearl, the gang head for Davy Jones’ locker to liberate Jack. When they hear that the villainous Cutler Beckett is conspiring with squid-faced Davy Jones to wipe out piracy altogether, the crew join forces with pirates from all corners of the earth for an epic high seas battle.

The first two Pirates of the Caribbean films were such massive successes that it's no surprise that Walt Disney decided to make a third.

The original film, The Curse of the Black Pearl, generated more than $650m worldwide, while Dead Man's Chest took over $1bn globally.

Elsewhere in the US chart, romantic comedy Knocked Up debuted at number two, taking $29.3m.

Shrek the Third, which features the voices of Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz, slipped one spot to third with $26.7m, bringing its domestic three-week haul to $255m.

Crime drama Mr Brooks, starring Kevin Costner and Demi Moore, entered the chart in fourth spot.

Spider-Man 3 dropped two places to number five, followed by romantic comedy Waitress in sixth place.

Gracie, a new entry, Bug, 28 Weeks Later and Disturbia rounded out the US top 10.
