Wedding Crashers has taken $116m in the US and Canada since its release three weeks ago

Wedding Crashers has toppled Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from the top of the North American box office, taking $20.4m over the weekend.

The romantic comedy, starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn, moved into the top spot after two weeks at number two.

The David Dobkin film has taken $116m in the US and Canada since its release three weeks ago.

After two weeks in first place, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory dropped to second with $16.4m. The Warner Bros. release has earned $148m in three weeks at the North American box office.

Disney's Sky High, featuring Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston, entered at number three with a three-day total of $14.6.

Stealth, a film about navy pilots taking on a rogue drone plane, came in fourth with $13.5m.

The top five was completed by Must Love Dogs ($13m), a romantic comedy starring Diane Lane and John Cusack.

Ticket sales plummeted over the weekend, with the top 12 movies making $112.1m, a 21 per cent decrease from the same weekend last year.
