Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory topped the UK box office on its opening weekend taking £7.4m ($13.1m).
The film has also been a huge success worldwide, earning around $150.7m (£84.9m) since it debuted in the US.
Based on the classic book by Roald Dahl, Johnny Depp plays Willy Wonka, a creepy chocolate pioneer who takes five children on a tour of his mythical operations.
The film also stars Freddie Highmore, David Kelly, Helena Bonham Carter, James Fox and Christopher Lee.
Second in the UK box office was the animated movie Madagascar. The film, which features the voices of David Schwimmer and Ben Stiller, made £1.7m.
Last week's number one Fantastic Four dropped two places to number three with £1.6m.
Romantic comedy Wedding Crashers, which this week claimed the top spot in the US box office, fell to fourth place in the UK.
Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi thriller War of the Worlds came in fifth.
Horror movie The Skeleton Key was one of only two new UK entries, entering at number six with takings of £769,968.
