Ocean's Thirteen, starring George Clooney and Brad Pitt, has gone straight to number one in the US box office chart.

The third film in the lucrative crime caper series took $37.1m in weekend ticket sales, according to studio estimates on Sunday.

Ocean's Thirteen, which also stars Al Pacino, Andy Garcia and Matt Damon, follows Danny Ocean, played by Clooney, and his boys as they attempt to rig a casino.

It had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The first movie - Ocean's Eleven - grossed $38.1m in its first three days back in 2001, while Ocean's Twelve made $39.2m on its weekend debut in 2004.

Ocean's Eleven went on to make $184m at the US box office, while Ocean's Twelve finished with a domestic box office haul of $125m.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, Ocean's Thirteen knocked last week's number one, Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World's End, into second place.

At World's End earned $21.3m between Friday and Sunday, bringing its US total to nearly $254m.

Romantic comedy Knocked Up, meanwhile, slipped one position to third, taking an estimated $20m.

Rounding out the top five were animated tales Surf's Up and Shrek the Third.

Horror sequel Hostel 2, directed by Eli Roth, debuted at number six, with ticket sales of $8.75m.

The film follows three American students who travel to a Slovakian city and end up as captives in a chamber of torture.

Crime drama Mr Brooks, starring Kevin Costner and Demi Moore, dropped three places to seventh.

Spider-Man 3 also slipped three spots to eighth, with Waitress ninth and Disturbia tenth.

The top 12 films took $133.6m, down more than 9 per cent on the same weekend last year when Cars debuted with a whopping $60m.

This weekend sees the releases of Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, Nancy Drew, DOA: Dead or Alive and Eagle vs Shark.
