Cruise tops Forbes power list

Cruise becomes the first celebrity to top the list twice

Cruise becomes the first celebrity to top the list twice

11th July 2006

Hollywood actor Tom Cruise has been named the world's most powerful celebrity by US business magazine Forbes.

The 43-year-old eclipsed last year's winner Oprah Winfrey, who dropped two spots to third.

Cruise, who also topped the 2001 Forbes Celebrity 100 list, earned an estimated $67m in 2005.

British rock group The Rolling Stones finished in second place, while Irish band U2 came fourth.

Forbes ranks people according to their salaries, media coverage and power.

"Cruise returns to the number one position on the Forbes Power 100, a post he held five years ago, thanks to a combination of his awesome earnings from War of the Worlds and the media onslaught following his pairing with actress Katie Holmes," Forbes said.

"He also generated tons of ink with his couch-jumping antics on "Oprah," his outspoken criticism of the pharmaceutical industry and, of course, his new baby, Suri. Love him or hate him, Cruise is Hollywood's most bankable actor."

US golf star Tiger Woods was ranked the fifth most powerful celebrity - dropping from second position last year.

Director Steven Spielberg held steady at six, but is first in the money rankings with estimated earnings of $332m.

US talk show host Howard Stern, rapper 50 Cent and best-selling author Dan Brown all made the top ten.

Harry Potter creator JK Rowling moved up three places to 19th.

The author has sold more than 300 million copies of her six Harry Potter books.

Other British celebrities in the list include singer Elton John at 16, England football captain David Beckham at 43 and supermodel Kate Moss at 77.

US actor Brad Pitt is at number 20, while his girlfriend Angelina Jolie is ranked 35th.

Cruise, who is engaged to actress Katie Holmes, has starred in such films as Mission: Impossible, Minority Report, Vanilla Sky, Days of Thunder and Cocktail.

He came 10th last year.
