Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest has topped the North American box office for a third consecutive week, according to studio estimates.
The Walt Disney sequel, which stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley, took a further $35m over the weekend period.
According to the BBC website, Dead Man's Chest has become the quickest film to break the $300m barrier in the US. The film took just 16 days to pass the milestone.
George Lucas' Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith passed the $300m mark in 17 days in 2005.
Dead Man's Chest is also the first summer movie since 2001 to spend three consecutive weeks at number one.
The original film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, generated $306m in the US and over $650m worldwide.
A third installment is currently in production.
Animated children's movie Monster House entered the US cinema chart at number two with ticket sales of $23m.
Horror Lady in the Water, featuring Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard, debuted at three, taking $18.2m in its opening three days.
Owen Wilson's comedy You, Me and Dupree slipped one place to four with earnings of $12.8m.
Little Man, starring Marlon and Shawn Wayans, also fell one spot to number five.
Other films in the top 10 included My Super Ex-Girlfriend, Superman Returns and The Devil Wears Prada.
The top 12 movies grossed $143.3m, up 10.8 per cent on the same weekend in 2005.
