Borat has become a US box office hit

Mock documentary Borat has topped the North American box office for a second week, taking an estimated $29m over the weekend period.

Starring British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen as a spoof Kazakh reporter, the film has taken an impressive $67.8m at the US and Canada box office so far.

Borat - full title Borat: Cultural Learning of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan - is directed by Larry Charles.

Disney's The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause remained in second place, while animated tale Flushed Away stayed at number three.

Comedy Stranger Than Fiction, starring Will Ferrell and Christian Stolte, debuted at number four, generating $14.1m between Friday and Sunday.

The top five was completed by Tobin Bell's Saw III, the third installment in the gory horror franchise.

Other newcomers in the top 10 included Sarah Michelle Gellar thriller The Return, and Ridley Scott's A Good Year, a light-hearted drama starring Russell Crowe.

The top 12 films pulled in an estimated $112.8m over the weekend, up by about 1.3 per cent from the same weekend last year.

This weekend sees the highly anticipated release of Casino Royale, the 21st James Bond film.

Casino Royale, based on the first of Ian Fleming's popular spy novels, will have its world premiere in London on Tuesday night.

The film, directed by Martin Campbell, stars Daniel Craig as James Bond and Mads Mikkelsen as Bond's nemesis Le Chiffre.
