21 plays its cards right at box office

Gambling drama 21 has debuted at the top of the North American box office, according to studio estimates.

The film, which stars Oscar-winning actor Kevin Spacey and Kate Bosworth, took in $23.7m between Friday and Sunday.

21, about college students caught counting cards at Las Vegas blackjack tables, is directed by Robert Luketic.

Last week's leader, animated movie Dr Seuss' Horton Hears A Who!, dropped to number two after taking $17.4m.

Superhero Movie entered the US film chart at number three, with ticket sales of an estimated $9.6m.

Comedy Meet The Browns, directed by Tyler Perry, slipped two spots to fourth, taking $7.8m.

Drillbit Taylor, starring Owen Wilson, took fifth place with $5.8m.

But takings for the top 12 movies in the US list were down 23 per cent from the same weekend last year.
