Prom Night has debuted at the top of the US and Canadian box office chart, figures from Media by Numbers shows.
The film, a remake of the 1980s slasher movie, made an estimated $22.7m in its opening three days.
Cop drama Street Kings, starring Keanu Reeves, opened at number two, taking $12m between Friday and Sunday.
Las Vegas gambling movie 21, a former US chart-topper, slipped one place to third, with ticket sales of $11m.
Jodie Foster's fantasy movie Nim's Island dropped two places to four and at number five was George Clooney's Leatherheads.
Other films in the top 10 included oddball comedy Smart People and animated movie Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who!.
American cinemas are currently experiencing a very slow period, Media By Numbers said.
According to the group, attendances so far this year are down by a whopping 6.6 per cent compared with the same period in 2007.
