The Forbidden Kingdom has topped the US box office on its opening weekend, figures from box office tracker Media By Numbers show.

The martial arts film, starring Jet Li and Jackie Chan, made an estimated $20.9m in its first three days.

Sex comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall debuted at number two, with ticket sales of $17.3m.

Former box office champion Prom Night, a remake of the 1980s slasher movie, dropped two places to third, taking $9.1m.

88 Minutes entered the US film chart in fourth place, while Jodie Foster's fantasy movie Nim's Island dropped to fifth.

Ticket sales were up for the first time in a month, with the top 12 films generating 12 per cent more than this time in 2007.

"There is a collective sigh of relief in Hollywood," said Paul Dergarabedian from, Media By Numbers.

"This is overdue and much needed as we head toward the beginning of the summer season."
