James Bond film Casino Royale has emerged as the big winner at this year's Empire Awards, scooping three top prizes.

The movie won best film and two acting prizes at last night's awards ceremony in London.

Daniel Craig, who played 007 in the film, was crowned best actor, while Bond girl Eva Green landed best female newcomer.

Empire magazine assistant editor Ian Freer said: "I'm delighted that Empire readers have decided that Casino Royale is the best film of the year.

"We're proud that real cinema-goers have the good taste to do something neither the critics' awards or industry prizes managed to do - really get behind the reinvention of James Bond as a great British triumph."

Volver star Penelope Cruz was voted best actress, while fans named Brandon Routh best male newcomer for his role in Superman Returns.

The accolade for best director went to Christopher Nolan for The Prestige.

9/11 drama United 93 won best British film and Martin Scorsese's gangster tale The Departed scooped best thriller.

The best horror prize went to Hostel, the best comedy winner was Little Miss Sunshine and Pan's Labyrinth was named best science fiction.

The Empire Awards are the only movie awards voted for by the British public. More than 50,000 people voted this year.

Based on Ian Fleming's first Bond book, Casino Royale took nearly $588m (£300m) at the global box office.

Directed by Martin Campbell, the film also stars Judi Dench, Mads Mikkelsen, Jeffrey Wright and Giancarlo Giannini.
