Bath students claim new Smurf record

Students at the University of Bath say they have beaten the world record for the most number of people dressed as Smurfs in one room.

Organised by the University of Bath Students' Union, the event took place during Freshers' Week, the welcome week for new students at the university.

According to organisers, 488 Smurfs signed in at the event, although unofficially there were 1,122 Smurfs in total.

Students had to meet strict criteria, including wearing a white hat, blue T-shirt, white trousers and shoes, and also wear blue face and body paint.

The independent adjudicators checked the criteria had been met, and 488 Smurfs signed in on entry to the event, but another 634 Smurfs came in without signing in, bringing the unofficial total to 1,122 Smurfs.

The previous record was held by Warwick University students' union, which managed to get 451 students dressed as Smurfs in July earlier this year.

Event organiser Scott Fisher said: "We thought this would be a fun way for our new students to get to know each other.

"By holding this event in Fresher's Week, we were pleased to have brought all the new students together and have also left our mark as this year's event managers."
