Gift Lists

An online gift list: The right choice for you?

30th November 2007

Using the internet to help with an online wedding gift list is becoming increasingly popular, offering several beneficial features that set them apart from traditional department stores.

Wrapit offers a refreshing approach to wedding lists, designed to tackle the problems of the disappointing department store wedding list service. They give an inspiring alternative to those with real imagination and style, and a helping hand to make the most of the massive choice on offer.

That’s not to say that department stores don’t have their place, of course they do. Where would we be without them? But, when it comes to setting up your wedding list, you can’t beat the specialist service, selection and website that has made Wrapit the largest independent wedding list service in Britain.

Below, Wrapit offer a few reasons why you might like to use the services of an online gift list provider rather than those of a department store.

Personal attention

Department stores offer very little personal service or meaningful selection advice. This makes a huge difference to your experience. The result is that going around the store trying to find all those gifts is actually a lot more stressful than it sounds!

At any department store you are a number on a screen. At Wrapit you’ll have a personal consultant, who will be in regular contact with you throughout the entire process. You’ll have a private consultation at a (shopper free) showroom. Your consultant will guide you around and discuss your likes and dislikes over a glass of wine, offering you expert advice to help you to build your list, your way.

Choice

Department stores advertise that they have thousands of things to choose from in their stores. This, of course, is true, but you’ll probably find that most of these products are not appropriate for your wedding list (unless both of you are really into eye shadow). For housewares and other normal wedding list stuff, the choice is really rather limited. The best example of this is china. The John Lewis website (which has a larger selection than most stores) only features 31 china patterns from a handful of brands (Wedgwood, Royal Worcester, Portmerion, Denby, Emma Bridgewater, when last we looked) and three of these feature only one pattern. And the same goes for glassware, and cutlery, and so on.

Beyond that, you’re limited to what they’ve got on the shop floor on the day you visit. This may cause you extra problems if you add seasonal items like garden furniture to your list. Because if it’s in store when you’re creating your list, it might be out of stock when you order it.

At Wrapit we have 40,000 wedding gifts, from over 400 brands. They are all on our website, and our seasonal items are available all year round. And if we don’t have what you’re looking for, we will do our best to find it and add it to your list for you.

Flexibility

Well, with department stores there’s practically none. At John Lewis you have to set up your list 6 weeks before your wedding. You have to order your gifts 2 weeks afterwards. And once items are bought, you’re committed, unless you wait to receive the item and then take it back for a credit (and you can only return up to 25% of the list).

A Wrapit list is entirely flexible. You can add and delete to your heart’s content. If you really want to, you can take all the money spent on your gifts and buy an entirely new list of items, but what this is really useful for is making up sets. It means you’re not left with 3 plates and 11 knives and forks.

It also means that you can set up, close and take delivery of your list whenever you want. Taking an extended honeymoon? No problem. Moving house? We’ll look after your gifts for you until you’re settled.

Delivery

Department stores will deliver some of your gifts faster than Wrapit, if they have them in stock. But anything else you will have to wait for - just the same as with Wrapit.

With John Lewis, you pay for delivery if you live more than 20 miles from a store. e.g in London - outside the M25.

With Debenhams it’s worse - your guests pay £3.50 for the delivery of each wedding gift they buy for you. If 50 gifts are bought for you, that’s an extra £175 they’ve collected - more than enough to pay for the £50 voucher they will offer you to set up your list with them.

Wrapit deliveries are free to everyone in the UK.

Boring

A saucepan set, a toaster, a dozen dinner plates and a kettle. That’s your basic department store wedding list. Yawn. Your friends and family will have seen it all before and will be so uninspired that they’ll probably get you something ‘off list’ instead. It happens. More often than you think. Because of the extensive range of gifts available at Wrapit, there's bound to be something a little different that takes your fancy.
