Johnson leads Livingstone in Mayoral race

3rd April 2008

The latest Guardian/ICM poll of Londoners suggests that Boris Johnson could pull off a sensational victory over Ken Livingstone on May 1st.

The poll reveals that Johnson is the first choice of 42% of London's voters, against 41% who favour Livingstone. Other candidates, including the Liberal Democrat former policeman Brian Paddick, on 10%, appear to be out of the running.

With less than a month to go before polling, Johnson and Livingstone are locked in an exceptionally tight race to become London's next Mayor. The Guardian/ICM poll gives Johnson a two-point lead overall - 51% to 49% - once second preferences have been allocated under London's alternative voting system. That is the narrowest possible margin of victory.

ICM Research interviewed a random sample of 1,002 London adults aged 18 by telephone on March 28 to April 1. Interviews were conducted across London and the results have been weighted to the profile of all London adults. ICM is a member of the British Polling Council and abides by its rules.
