The Olympic torch has reached Hong Kong on its way to the Chinese capital of Beijing, the Games' host city.

And early reports suggest the Hong Kong parade has not be ruined by the human rights protests that have marred previous torch legs in London, Paris and San Francisco.

Hong Kong Chief Executive Donald Tsang kicked off the relay at a ceremony by the harbour.

"We are a world in a city, where different people with different beliefs and different views have thrived in a spirit of diversity, tolerance and respect," he said.

Lee Lai-shan, Hong Kong's first ever Olympic gold medalist, was the first runner.

She was followed by Olympic table tennis stars Li Ching and Ko Lai-chak and Hong Kong heartthrob Andy Lau.

Hong Kong is the 20th leg of the global torch relay.
