Tevez strike saves United

21st February 2008

Carlos Tevez scored a crucial away goal as Manchester United came from a goal behind to draw with Lyon in the first leg of their Champions League tie.

The Argentine international came off the bench to score a vital 86th minute equaliser for the English champions.

Lyon took a deserved lead soon after the break when striker Karim Benzema turned and fired a superb shot past keeper Edwin van der Sar.

Manchester United will now be strong favourites to progress from the return leg of this second round tie at Old Trafford in a fortnight.

"It gives us a good chance," said Manchester United boss Ferguson. "You're not sure you're going to get that type of away goal in Europe.

"There was an urgency to get back in the game and I think we are best in that situation."

Arsenal put their 4-0 FA Cup drubbing by Manchester United behind them with a much improved performance as they drew 0-0 against mighty AC Milan at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger's talented young side dominated for long periods but could not unlock an experienced and well-organised Milan defence.

Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor missed a wonderful late chance to win the tie for the Gunners when his point-blank header struck the crossbar in the 93rd minute.

Milan, the reigning European champions, created few openings but will travel back to Italy happy with the stalemate.

But Arsenal boss Wenger remained hopeful that his side could still progress to the quarter finals.

He said: "It promises to be a very interesting game in the second leg. Unfortunately we cannot transfer our pitch to the San Siro, so the pitch will certainly not be of the quality we had tonight.

"I hope the game will not suffer from it so much because I feel we can play at a high tempo for 90 minutes and because I feel that they will have to come out anyway in the second leg.

"Also because tonight they didn't create any chances and defensively we were very good."
