Tevez fires United to semi clash with Barca

Manchester United booked their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Italian giants AS Roma at Old Trafford.

Roma started the better and should have taken the lead from the penalty spot after Wes Brown brought down Mancini but Daniele de Rossi smashed the ball over the crossbar.

Mirko Vucinic also went close as United struggled to cope with the pace and movement of the Italians.

But the hosts went ahead when Argentine international Carlos Tevez scored with a diving header from an excellent Owen Hargreaves cross.

United’s comfortable 3-0 aggregate win sets up a tasty last-four tie with Spanish champions Barcelona.

The Catalans produced another lackluster performance as they beat German outfit Schalke 1-0 at the Nou Camp.

Yaya Toure, younger brother of Arsenal’s Kolo, scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said he was relishing the prospect of facing Barcelona in the semi-finals.

"I'm looking forward to it," he said. "I think that we have something special in our team.

"We cannot go to Spain and be negative, we must be positive."

United last faced Barcelona in the Champions League back in 1998 when their group game at the Nou Camp finished in a spectacular 3-3 draw.

However, Ferguson’s side won the Champions League final at the same venue a year later when they beat Bayern Munich 2-1 with two very late goals.

In the other semi-final, Liverpool play Premier League rivals Chelsea.
