Comme des Garçons' founder and head designer Rei Kawakubo is bringing her high end designs to the UK high street.

The leading Japanese fashion brand is joining forces with popular high street chain Hennes & Mauritz (H&M).

Kawakubo, famous and admired for her creativity and artistry, will design a women's and a men's collection for the Swedish retailer, with some pieces for children too.

Accessories and an exclusive unisex fragrance will also be included in the collection.

"I have always been interested in the balance between creation and business," said Kawakubo.

"It is a dilemma, although for me creation has always been the first priority. It is a fascinating challenge to work with H&M since it is a chance to take the dilemma to its extreme, and try to solve it," added the 65-year-old.

Margareta van den Bosch, creative advisor for H&M, said: "Rei Kawakubo has been at the top of our wish list for a long time and we are thrilled that she has chosen to collaborate with us.

"We have tremendous respect for Kawakubo's fashion philosophy of questioning fashion's ingrained patterns, and admire her artistic approach to design.

"We are particularly excited that the collection will be launched in Japan, Kawakubo's native country, at the same time as the launch of our new store there."

The Comme des Garçons collection for H&M will be launched at the opening of the chain's second Tokyo store at the beginning of November.

Kawakubo founded Comme des Garçons in Tokyo in 1973. The company now produces 14 different brands and employs nearly 700 people, with shops in more than 25 countries.

Kawakubo is the latest in a long line of celebrities and fashion designers who have collaborated with H&M.

Stella McCartney, Viktor & Rolf and Madonna have all teamed up with H&M in recent years.
