The iPod has helped revitalise Apple's fortunes

The iPod has helped revitalise Apple's fortunes

8th August 2005

Apple said on Monday that its iTunes online music service in Japan has sold 1 million songs in just four days.

Japanese music lovers can access a million tracks, most priced at 150 yen ($1.35) to download.

The iTunes music store is now available in 20 countries, reaching 85% of the global music market.

"iTunes has become Japan’s number one online music store in just four days," Apple's Steve Jobs said.

"iTunes has sold twice as many songs in just four days as all the other online music services in Japan sell in one month."

The iTunes Music Store in Japan features local favorites including iTunes Originals from globe and Ulfuls, exclusives from Def Tech, Crazy Ken Band, Chara, Little Creatures, Chie Ayado and The Complete B’z digital box set.

The Japanese launch comes over two years since Apple started offering the service in the US.

Apple has sold 21 million iPods since their introduction in October 2001, making it the most widely used digital music player on the market.

The US-based firm is set to face competition from rival computer company Napster, who are expected to launch their very own music download service in Japan later this year.
