US internet giant Google is still the world's most popular search engine, figures show.
In February 2006, Google received 48.5 per cent of all web searches, according to tracking firm Nielsen Media Research.
Yahoo was second with a 22.5 per cent share, followed by MSN with 10.7 per cent, AOL with 6.6 per cent and My Way Search with 2.7 per cent.
According to Nielsen, the total number of searches reached 5.3 billion in February, up 38 per cent on the same month a year earlier.
Nielsen said the surge was driven by an increased number of searches per person, particularly for images and shopping information.
"While the number of unique searchers in the US over the past year has remained relatively stable, we see search usage intensity increasing, not only in the number of searches done per person for general web content, but also for searches initiated specifically for photos and graphics, as well as for comparison shopping information," said Nielsen vice president Michael Lanz.
