France remains the world's most popular tourist destination, according to figures from the World Tourism Organization (WTO).

Some 79.1 million foreign travellers visited French soil last year, a rise of more than 1 million on the previous 12 months.

The majority of visitors to France came from Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland, the figures show.

France is adorned with some of the most beautiful cities and tourist attractions in the world.

Disneyland Paris, the Louvre Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower help to attract visitors from all over the globe.

Spain is the second most popular tourist destination in the world, the WTO said.

The country, famous for its paella and golden sandy beaches, attracted 58.5 million tourists last year.

Spain also continues to be the most popular overseas tourist destination among British holidaymakers.

The United States took third spot with 51.1 million foreign visitors, followed by China in fourth on 49.6 million.

But according to the WTO, China will become the world's largest tourist market by 2020.

Thanks to Venice, its most famous jewel, Italy is another popular destination for foreign travellers.

Nearly 42 million people visited the country last year, putting it a respectable fifth on the WTO list.

The United Kingdom (30.1 million), Mexico (21.4 million) and Russia (20.2 million) all made the top 10.
