A prestigious British hotel is serving up what is thought to be the world's most expensive sandwich.
The von Essen Platinum Club Sandwich has gone on the menu at the luxurious Cliveden House hotel in Taplow, Berkshire, for £100.
It is made from Iberico ham, poulet de Bresse, quail eggs, semi-dried Italian tomatoes, white truffles and 24-hour fermented sour dough bread.
The sandwich weighs 530 grams and has been described by the hotel as the "perfect lunchtime treat for gastronomes".
It was believed to be a favourite of English King Edward VII and his wife Wallis Simpson.
Air-cured for 30 months, the Iberico ham comes from the prized black-footed pig, while the poulet de Bresse is described by the French as the "fourth gastronomic wonder of the world".
The notoriety of the chicken of Bourg-en-Bresse dates back to the sixteenth century when Henry IV of France demanded its inclusion on the courtly menu, according to the hotel.
The sandwich has been created by James Parkinson, the hotel's executive head chef.
"The club sandwich is one of the hospitality industry's staples," he said.
"Until now, I am yet to experience a version that is worthy of the many five-star hotels I have visited.
"The sandwich is made from the very finest ingredients and the taste is simply sublime."
